YES, solar panels really work. Seven years ago Live Green Apartments installed solar thermal panels on top of the building at Grand and Dale. These panels are black with insulated glass, so they absorb the sun's thermal heat in a glycol solution which is then pumped down and pre-heats the hot water for our building. On bright sunny days it heats our water above 170 degrees, and on bright winter days it can pre-heat our water to 60-80 degrees (even if it is below zero outside). Click here for more details.

Everyday can be Earth Day even if you live in an apartment.  Simple things can add up to large benefits to our planet; like recycling, turning electronics off, taking shorter showers, keeping windows closed in the winter, and getting off junk mail lists.  We do our best to give our residents resources to make choices so they can help the Earth everyday versus just one day a year.  Check it out, you may find some things you can do:!

Car sharing are companies that own cars and let people sign up to use them.  It is a great resource for people who do not need to use cars very often.  Many times residents in apartments do not need a car very often because they use the public transit system.  The car sharing programs make it easy for them to get a car when they need it.

In the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) HOURCAR is the company that provides car sharing.  Our Live Green Apartments in Saint Paul are all within 1/2 a mile of car sharing stations.  For more information go to our HOURCAR page.

If your apartment is too hot in the winter, DON'T OPEN THE WINDOWS! This is the first reaction most residents have and it is incorrect.  By opening the windows you are causing the heating system to waste energy and create more pollution.  You also could be causing other apartments in your building to be cold.

The correct thing to do is to submit a maintenance request to have your radiators properly adjusted.  This is called balancing the heat system so that all the apartments in the building heat to the same temperature.  Click here for specific recommendations about hot and cold apartments in the winter.

Feng Shui can provide some great ideas and methods to decorate your apartment.  The main concept is to keep it simple and have only items you need.  You can use screens, plants, crystals, and many other items to manage the space and energy in your apartment. Fen Shui is not some mystical idea, it is about locating items in practical places to make rooms more functional.
