My smoke detector is chirping

If your smoke detector or CO detector is chirping (beeping intermittently every minute or so), it is not an emergency, it just means that the battery needs to be replaced. You can replace the battery yourself.

We recommend using a chair, step ladder, or stool to reach the detector.

Some smoke detectors have both a battery and are plugged into the wall. In this case you should also check to make sure there are no breakers in the off position that could be cause a lack of electricity to get to the smoke detector. Click here for more information on checking your breakers.

If you have trouble getting the detector off the wall, please contact our office.

Please do not permanently disable detectors. This is a major fire hazard.
